CDMX / México City
After the conquest of the mighty Aztec empire in the early 1500s, the Spanish built México City over the Aztec’s capital city using much of the building material from its great pyramids and other structures. The Metropolitan Cathedral and the National Palace (government building) was constructed in part from this material.
As one of the largest populated cities in the world, México City has everything from fine dining to street food, 150+ museums, shopping and more shopping, and magnificent palaces. In fact, México’s capital is often referred to as the City of Palaces. Some of the government buildings and some of the museums are housed in former palaces originally built by rich Spaniards and French families.
It’s newest claim to fame is that the city itself has now become recognized by the federal government in 2016 as a separate México state called, Ciudad de México or the shorter version is just CDMX.
