Nayarit

Tourism promoters have dubbed the southern Pacific coastline of this state, the Riviera Nayarit. This region is located just north of Puerto Vallarta in Jalisco state. Nice resorts, restaurants, and other touristy amenities can found here.

Adventurers can also find fair size ocean waves for surfing in places like Sayulita and for reptile aficionados, there is a crocodile refuge further up the coast in San Blas.

In the capital city of Tepic, something of interest to see is the Cross of Zacate (La cruz de Zacate). Way back in 1621, someone found a thick patch of taller grass which was different from the other surrounding grass. To add to the mystery, this patch of grass is shaped like a cross. And even though the other grass gets dry and dull in the colder months, this patch never dries out and always remains green. Over the centuries, many have claimed that when adding cuttings of this grass to other herbs, it supposedly healed their ailments.

Believing it to be a sign from God, the Franciscans built a convent next to this grass cross back in 1784.
