Plan to gather in the lobby of our downtown México City hotel at 6:00pm to meet-up with our México host guide. Together, we will then go to enjoy a nice Welcome to México Dinner. During dinner, our host guide will brief us on our city itinerary for the next few days. Afterwards, we’ll go up to the 44th floor of the Torre Latinamerica Tower to its observation deck where we can take in a 360° panoramic view of the city skyline and all its lights at night. We will sleep in México City for 6 nights. (D)
This morning we’ll experience the preferred method of transportation used by millions of local residents each day in México City. With some 23 million people living there, public transportation is a necessity for getting around. Following our guide, we’ll head underground and hop on and off several Metro trains toward our destination today. Then we’ll ride on a local bus to the Teotihuacán Archaeological Zone. Prepare to do some walking as this archaeological site is HUGE! Our host guide will lead us to the main sites of interest and give us more of an understanding of the history of this awesome ancient site. Note: The Mexican government no longer allows guests to climb up the steps of these ancient pyramids. After years of wear and tear from hundreds of thousands of visitors, it was determined that it would be best to stop everyone from walking up to the top to help preserve this century’s old ancient city. Later, we will retrace our steps using public transportation to return to our hotel. The evening is free to explore on our own. (B,L)
Because our hotel is located in the central historic region of México City, we’ll head out on a walking tour to view the fine arts palace called, Bellas Artes. We’ll also marvel at the old ornate post office. It too is housed in a stately palace. We’ll walk along Calle Madero, the pedestrian street linking México City’s main plaza to the other downtown areas and marvel at the old churches and several buildings which were at one time, spacious private palaces. In the central plaza area of the city we will visit the huge Metropolitan Cathedral, the century’s old government palace (Palacio Nacional) with its beautiful murals, and also explore the partially uncovered ruins of the two great pyramids from the age of the Aztec empire. It is there we will also find the Templo Mayor Museum which showcases the archaeological artifacts found in and around this ancient city ruins site. After lunch at a local restaurant, we’ll walk back toward the fine arts palace and stroll through the oldest planned city park in the Americas, Parque Alemada. On the other side of this huge city park will be our destination, the Diego Rivera Mural Museum. This museum houses just one huge painting by this famous artist. At almost 50 feet long, this intricate and colorful mural depicts historical and contemporary figures. The rest of this day and evening is free to relax or go exploring on your own. (B,L)
On this daylong outing, we’ll eat our way through 3 México City neighborhoods (breakfast & lunch). Think coffee, pastries, fresh fruits, different kinds of street foods, as well as visiting several local markets. And for the really adventurous folks in our small group, they can also munch on a few edible insects. Yum! Note: There will be lots of walking (4-5 miles total) including many flights of stairs. Also, it will NOT be a good idea to eat breakfast before this tour starts as we will be trying around 19 different foods throughout the day. The rest of this day will be for more self-exploration or just to recover and relax from all the tasty foods we consumed throughout this day.
Following breakfast, we will once again travel like the locals by boarding Metro trains which will take us from the east side to the west side of the city. Our tour agenda today will begin by exploring a section of the National Museum of Anthropology. This extensive museum has 23 huge exhibit rooms containing some 600,000 exhibit pieces, Many are pre-hispanic dating back several thousand years. It would take days to really go through this massive museum. With that in mind, we will target our focus on just a couple of the exhibit rooms. After lunch, we’ll then walk up a hill to the Castillo de Chapultepec. This is the only royal castle found in all of North America. It was once the residence of an appointed México Emperor by Napoleon III of France after Mexico was invaded by his army in the 1860s. This magnificent castle sits high on top of a hill on the west end of the city overlooking a huge park and in the distance, it has a commanding view of the Paseo de la Reforma, a wide avenue modeled after the well-known boulevard in Paris, the Champs-Élysées. Today, this castle on the hill is also the home to México’s National History Museum. This museum gives visitors an overview of the history of México from the Spanish conquest to the early 1900s. Large colorful murals and paintings were created by several prominent Mexican artists showcasing a visual adaptation of some key periods in this country’s history. We will return to our hotel via public transportation. (B,L)
Located in the historic center of México City, this excellent art museum showcases pieces dating back to the mid-16th century. As an added bonus, this museum is housed in a beautiful palace. It’s like visiting 2 museums in one. We can admire the galleries of exquisite works of art as well as the structure of this very elegant and ornate palace the artwork is displayed in. After lunch, we will head over to an area of the city that most still looks like it was back in the 15th and 16th centuries when the Aztecs ruled here. Xochimilco still has remnants of the waterways used to transport people and goods. We can also learn how they actually created new land for living and farming out of a once shallow lake. Later in the evening, we will all get together again for a farewell dinner at one of México City’s lively restaurants. (B,L,D)
Taxis or Ubers for transportation to the México City Airport for our flights home or a flight to our next exciting travel destination. The other option would be to plan on staying a little longer to do some more exploring in México City and perhaps, the nearby states of Puebla and Tlaxcala. (B) Buen Viaje!
