I want to tell you about a pleasant getaway to Cadereyta, Querétaro—one of México’s charming Pueblos Mágicos. A few years ago I stumbled upon a peaceful escape here: the Jardín Botánico Regional de Cadereyta. It’s well-organized, with beautiful walkways perfect for a relaxing stroll. Just an hour’s drive from the city of Querétaro, this place is an ideal find for nature lovers.
This garden was created and maintained by the National Institute of Forestry, Agricultural, and Livestock Research (INIFAP). Since its inception a few decades ago, it has become a haven for desert plant enthusiasts. This botanical garden in Querétaro state focuses on conserving native species, some of which are endangered.
While most of the signs along the garden walkways are in Spanish, the scientific names are written and these well-marked descriptions will guide you through the various plants.
If you’re wondering about tours, there are guides available, though they typically speak Spanish. If you’d prefer an English-speaking guide, it’s best to contact the garden ahead of time to see if one can be arranged. No guarantees.

But Cadereyta offers more than just the garden. Something that really stood out to me was that, unlike most towns in México, Cadereyta’s main plaza has two churches! The older Temple of San Pedro and San Pablo was built in the 18th-century colonial period and sits alongside the Temple of El Refugio which was built in the 19th century. Finding two churches on the same square in this small town is rare in my travels through México but it’s a unique piece of history that makes this Pueblo Mágico even more interesting. It seems the two were built for different religious orders.
If you’re into outdoor adventures, you’ll also love that Cadereyta is considered the Gateway to the Sierra Gorda Biosphere. It’s an ideal starting point to explore the rugged landscapes, waterfalls, and hiking trails that make the Sierra Gorda one of the most stunning natural areas in México.
So, whether you’re in it for the plants, history, adventure, or all three, Cadereyta is a perfect day trip from Querétaro City. It could also be a stepping-off point to explore the massive Sierra Gorda World Biosphere Region.
