If you’re like me and enjoy exploring a city beyond its surface charm, then you’ve probably asked yourself: Should I hire a local guide?
I’ve been to the city of Puebla multiple times—on my own, with friends, and alongside a professional guide—and I can say without hesitation: having a knowledgeable local with you changes everything.
What You Miss Without a Guide
Sure, you can walk through the historic center, snap photos of the Baroque churches, and grab a coffee under the shadow of the Cathedral. Puebla is beautiful. But without someone who knows the stories behind those buildings or how they connect to the larger history of México, you’re really just sightseeing.
I once walked through the Biblioteca Palafoxiana – famous as the oldest public library in the Americas—and thought, “Nice old books.” It wasn’t until a guide later explained how it symbolized the shift toward public learning in colonial New Spain that I realized what I had missed. The same happened at the Templo de San Francisco, where I hadn’t understood the cultural importance of the relics of San Sebastián de Aparicio until someone explained how he became a kind of unofficial patron saint for transport workers.

Puebla is one of México’s food capitals. Mole poblano, chiles en nogada, cemitas, and handmade sweets from Calle de los Dulces—you can try them all. But a good guide in Puebla—especially one who’s bilingual and experienced with curious travelers—isn’t there to babysit you. They’re there to enrich your journey, answer your questions, and help you avoid wasting time or missing out.
Of course, quality varies. Not every guide is a good fit. That’s why I always recommend working with someone who’s been vetted or comes with strong recommendations.
