Day 1:
Your tour guide will be waiting for you upon your arrival at the Veracruz Airport. If time permits, he will take you on a tour to see some of the city sights. Your family will stay this evening in a local beachside hotel located just north of the city in the small seaside town of Playa Chachalacas.
Day 2: (B,L,D)
This morning you can simply relax and enjoy a leisurely breakfast with your family. Then you may want to take a stroll along the ocean and unwind from your travel the day before. Later, it will be time for your first exciting outdoor activity in Veracruz. Can you picture this? Your family on ATVs riding on the beach and then up and over sand dunes. Your younger children will double up with an adult so everyone can experience the adventurous fun of cruising on ATVs. Don’t worry if you have never ridden one before as your professional guide will show you everything you need to know to operate your ATV. These massive dunes are also a great location for exciting sand board skiing or sand surfing. What a blast! Even your youngest will be laughing and shouting as they try skiing down the sand dunes on their sand board. They can even sit on the board and slide down like a sled. It’s great family fun! Again, you will overnight in the same beachside hotel.
Day 3: (B,L,D)
Time to check out of your hotel and get ready for another day of tropical adventures! The state of Veracruz is known as the Whitewater River Rafting Capital of México. The tropical riverside town of Jalcomulco will be your home base for a day of wet and wild class 2 & 3 white-water river rafting. You and your children will also get to experience the thrill of flying high over the river on a zipline ride. Later, you will travel to the city of Veracruz where your guide will get you checked into your new hotel. Later, he will lead your family on a walking tour of the city. Especially in the evening, the central square comes alive with local people, musicians, and vendors. It will also be a great place to have dinner at one of the outdoor restaurants located right in the heart of all this activity.
Day 4: (B,L,D)
After breakfast, you will journey to the southern part of the state to the tropical lakeside town of Catemaco. On your way, you will stop to see the massive waterfall used in the movie, Apocalypto. It is almost impossible to get real close without getting sprayed. Think of it as the Niagara Falls of Veracruz. Continuing on to Catemaco, you will check in at a hotel very close to the lake. In the afternoon, you will have the opportunity to explore Lake Catemaco by boat, visit an eco-nature reserve, and try to spot monkeys that live on the island lakes. The evening is free to relax, swim in the hotel pool, or explore the town.
Day 5: (B,L,D)
This morning your family will enjoy the lush green tropical scenery as you travel partway around one of México’s largest lakes to a small village. A native from this village will lead everyone on a jungle hike through the tropical jungle forest. During your hike, your village guide will teach your family about how some of the trees and plants you are seeing are used for making medicine or for cooking. You and your kids will have the opportunity to swim and play in the crystal clear pools found below the waterfalls you will discover on your hike. Lunch will be at a local family’s home. After lunch, you will travel to a small horse ranch and saddle up for a fun horseback trail ride. Later, your guide will take you back to Catemaco and your hotel. Dinner will be at a local restaurant in town.
Day 6: (B,L,D)
After breakfast and checkout, the day begins by traveling through the tropical countryside toward the Gulf of México to the small seaside pueblo of Montepio. Here your family can relax, play on the beach, and swim. Lunch will be on the beach with your toes in the sand at one of the local beachside restaurants.
FYI – Tell your kids their phone and internet will not work here. At least for part of the day, your family will be “unplugged.”
Then you you will hop on a small boat to go check out a large sea cave which is only accessible by boat. Centuries ago, it was used by pirates to hide their loot. During your boat ride, be on the lookout for flying fish. Sometimes you can spot them. Then your boat driver will take everyone to an island that looks like it just came out of the movie, Jurassic Park. From the boat, you can view the hundreds and hundreds of tropical birds either on the island or circling the island overhead. It’s a cool site! Later, it will be time to head back north to the city of Veracruz where your hotel will be waiting for you.
Day 7: (B,L,D)
This morning begins by exploring a gigantic fortress which sits in the harbor of Veracruz port. Your guide will tell you all about the history of this menacing fortress. Next, it will be time to hit the air conditioning when your family goes to see the famous Veracruz Sea Aquarium. It is the largest of its kind in all of Latin America. Your kids will love watching sharks swim right over their head, view sea turtles up-close, and laugh at the antics of the dolphins as they frolic in their own huge tank. The small penquins are fun to watch too. In the evening, your kids will love having a farewell dinner on board the retired Mexican Naval Ship, the Cañonero Guanajuato. It is docked in the harbor of Boca del Rio, the neighboring city to Veracruz. Later, your guide will take you back to your hotel.
