I’m talking about the Veracruz I’ve come to know after years of living there and of having many opportunities to explore this wild, rugged, under-the-radar paradise for outdoor lovers.
That’s why I created this 10-day Veracruz adventure tour in México—to give people a chance to experience this gulf coast state’s other side. Not the cultural and historical one but the one filled with roaring rivers, misty mountains, raging tropical waterfalls, a sea of very tall sand dunes, and some of the most exciting eco-adventures in the country. From Sea Kayaking to the Historic City of Veracruz
We kick things off in the port city of Veracruz. It’s a lively intro to the trip and gives us a chance to sea kayak in the Gulf of México, glide over coral reefs, and wander through a massive old fortress built to defend against pirates. We’ll explore the city’s central area, where you can grab a good coffee or just people-watch in the plaza before the serious action begins.
ATVs, Sand Dunes & Cliff Rappels
Next, we head an hour north of the port city to Playa Chachalacas. I love this place! It’s got this massive stretch of beach that leads to towering sand dunes. We hop on ATVs and ride over the dunes like it’s our own private desert, then break out the sandboards for a few downhill runs.
The next day includes a real highlight: rappelling down a rocky sea cliff with ocean waves crashing below. And after that adrenaline boost, we slow it down a bit with a peaceful boat ride through a tangled mangrove estuary. It’s the kind of day that makes you feel like you’ve done a week’s worth of travel.
Rivers, Waterfalls & Ziplining in the Mountains
Veracruz is home to some of the best whitewater rafting in México, and we make the most of it. Fueled by glacial runoff from Pico de Orizaba and seasonal rains, these rivers run wild. After rafting rapids in the morning, we zipline over the water—because why not keep the momentum going?
Next, we settle into the coffee-growing region of Xico and Coatepec. It’s a slower pace, but not for long. The next day, we suit up in wetsuits and rappel down five waterfalls in a canyoning adventure that gets your heart pumping in all the best ways.
Markets, Mountain Roads & Bamboo Farms
The adventure continues in Coscomatepec, a town tucked under Pico de Orizaba. Mondays here mean one thing: the local market. It’s a sprawling, colorful maze of stalls selling everything from goats to used jeans. We’ll explore it all.
Then we’ll head into the mountains for a scenic drive to a village called Alpatlahuac and a hike to catch some more scenic views. There’s something peaceful about this stretch of the tour. We will also visit a massive bamboo farm, take in panoramic views, and enjoy the slower rhythm of rural life—all without giving up the adventure vibe.
Sacred Caves & Farewell Views
On Day 9, we hike to a huge ceremonial cavern once used by pre-Hispanic communities for rituals. Nearby is a hidden waterfall that feels like it’s out of a movie. It’s a powerful way to wrap up our time in the mountains before we return to Veracruz city for one last dinner together.
Final Thoughts
This isn’t your average beach vacation. It’s a 10-day, multi-sport journey through rivers, cliffs, caves, waterfalls, dunes, and mountain villages. Every day offers something new.
